FAQ

Why would you want to join a Carnival Band?

  • You would like something really nice to do on August Bank holiday- something as good as a holiday. Something to talk about on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
  • You have been promising yourself for years that you would come off the barricades and onto the road.
  • You actually like making things.
  • You have heard that the moment when all the costumes come out of their bags and off the trucks and become a work of art to go on the road, is really really magic and you would like to be part of the creation.

If you have ticked one of these it is time to find a costume band.

Does it cost?

Yes if you want to wear a costume. The costumes cost as much as the materials in them. However most people put down a deposit in June at the Launch of the band and pay their costumes off in bits.

How do you know what they will look like?

You will find designs at the launch event. You will also get an idea at the launch event of who else will be investing in a day of pure fun. You can hear the music and get an idea of what to expect.

How do you know what goes on, where you start, where you finish do you have to do the whole route, are there toilets?

You will have all this information about a week before Carnival. You can meet us at the dressing point or book a place on the buses from the Oval.

What can you learn?

We provide dance classes, Carnival make-up classes, production workshops, Carnival costume decoration. We are passionate about Carnival , its history and its value.
We can teach a very limited number of people about structure.
We encourage people to make portfolios of their work and many go on to further training or even to jobs.

What if I am not sure about masquerading in costume?

Well you will not know what you are missing. However we do need lots of stewards, particularly on Carnival Monday. You look after the masqueraders, you are a most welcome part of the organisation and you do get a T shirt. There is a training session which we will ask you to do.

Do we do children's Carnival on the Sunday?

Yes, we do but we do expect a parent to act as a Steward
We can¹t take responsibility for your child. We do have a children's band of about 100 and will welcome more.

Can I come a few days before Carnival and look for a costume?

Sadly no, costumes do have to be ordered in advance
Will my costume fit?
Well -yes measurements are taken at the time of
order.

How do you get involved in making?

Come to the Oval House from the first week of July. The Mas (as in masquerade) camp is open each week day from 1.00p.m. to 10.00 p.m. You need to offer at least two hours and someone will ask you to do something and show you how to do it. You may have skills already, you may think you have none but there are always things to do at all levels.
Saturdays and Sundays are arranged each week as
sometimes we are out doing carnivals in last years costumes.

Kids ? Cafe?

We cannot provide a crèche but we are used to lots of
children round. We provide a simple meal each evening for £1.50p. so you have something to keep you going.

Can I offer to sponsor you?

YES! We are a classy band. Gifts in kind are most welcome too.

Disability Access

The Mas Camp is all on ground level and has quite good disability access. It is well ventilated and airy. There is a car park but it does tend to fill up by late afternoon.
